Submissions for Summer/Fall
now  O P E N .
deadline: Dec. 15

...that's Topiary. We're a small staff of full-time students and lifelong litpeople, and we're gathered here today, in and among our ornamental hedges, to get through this thing called life.

To that end: expect a slight hike in response times around midterm and finals weeks. While weeks 2 - 9 are, confusingly, fair game for "midterms" at Stanford, we can promise a definite slump in the neighborhood of weeks 5 and 8.

Poetry: can rhyme; does not need to rhyme. can be verse; does not need to be verse.

Prose: strictly fictional narratives, unless you're really bent on pulling a fast one.

Essays: strictly non-fictional musings, analyses, and criticism, unless you're really bent on pulling a fast one. *note: nothing against pwr courses or the work they produce, but we've found (in the year or so of our existence) that pwr essays generally don't make the cut. for some representative samples of stuff we'll likely like, check out our staff reading list.

Illustrations: we're big fans of black-and-white and hand-drawn. Coincidentally, also does wonders for our print budget.

Calling all
poets, essayists, artists,
novelists, playwrights, doodlers,
satirists, web developers, and designers:

Topiary is a Stanford-based literary journal
that publishes undergraduate, graduate and faculty
work. We believe in the power of print, the book
as art-object, the importance of good design, and
the impact that a small group of people can
have on the literary world at-large. If you
believe the same, we hope you'll
join us. Together,

we'll
make
a
thing
of
beauty!
